Mathematician, F.R.S. He is best known for his extensive work in number theory, in particular the geometry of numbers, Diophantine approximation and the analytic theory of numbers. He wrote a number of important textbooks and monographs including "The higher Arithmetic" (1952). He attended Accrington Grammar School, and in 1924 he obtained a scholarship to attend Manchester University, where he studied mathematics and graduated in 1927. He then went to Trinity College, Cambridge to take another degree. He was drawn by the lectures of John Edensor Littlewood on theory of primes, and Abram Samoilovitch Besicovitch on periodic functions. In 1937 he took an appointment at the University of Manchester, where he moved into the areas of diophantine approximation and geometry of numbers. He was President of the London Mathematical Society from 1957 to 1959.
