A remarkable woman ahead of her time, Bernadette was a central figure in the literary life of North Carolina throughout her career. She was an award-winning author, photographer, publicist and journalist, a member and former chairman of the North Carolina Writers Conference, founder and director of the Tar Heel Writers Roundtable, author of "Tar Heel Writers I Know," "It's Five o'Clock Somewhere," and countless newspaper and magazine articles, historian of Campbell University and biographer of James Archibald Campbell, director of public information for the State Board of Public Welfare and later for the North Carolina Council on Mental Retardation. She served as writer for the North Carolina Democratic Party Executive Committee. There was no greater fan and supporter of North Carolina's writers, whether published or aspiring. She was survived by her son, daughter and five grandchildren, all of whom loved her dearly.
