Melvin was drafted into the US Army 29 March 1965 by the Portsmouth Selective Service Board.
Upon arriving in Vietnam 14 February 1966, Melvin was assigned to B Company, 1st Battalion, 5th Infantry, 25th Infantry Division, USARV. B Company was on a patrol when a hostile booby-trapped device was detonated. Melvin was med-evac and died at the 3rd Field Hospital, as a result of metal fragmentation wounds to the body from explosion.
Survived by his wife, Donna J Sherrell and his mother; Gladys L Knight Sherrell, both of 720 South Street, Portsmouth, Virginia.
