J. R. "Sonny" Harper, 62, of Palatka died Friday, Aug. 31, 2001, at his residence following a brief illness.
He was born in Gainesville, attended Palatka schools and had been a lifelong resident of Palatka. He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of the Vietnam Conflict, where he served three tours of duty. He received several Purple Hearts for wounds received in battle. He worked for Trinity Steel Fabricators in Green Cove Springs as a truck driver for 16 years, retiring in 2001. He was an active member of the Trinity Baptist Church in Palatka where he was the Sunday School director. He enjoyed fishing.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Etha Harper; and one sister, Bernice Johnson.
He is survived by his wife of 26 years, Ginny Harper of Palatka; three brothers and sisters-in-law, William and Louise Harper of Evanston, Wyo., Tommy Harper of Palatka, and Gilbert and Nancy Harper of Palatka; one sister, Lois Hensel of St. Augustine; one brother-in-law, Marvin Johnson of Palatka; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services and video tribute will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2001, at Masters Funeral Home of Palatka with the Rev. Ira Ramey, Dr. Lorace Cothron and the Rev. James Cowart officiating. Burial will follow in Palatka Memnorial Gardens with military honors bestowed by the U. S. Marine Corps. Friends may call at the home from 6-8 p.m. Monday.
Masters Funeral Home of Palatka is in charge of arrangements.
