He was born March 28, 1923, in Harvey, Arkansas, to the late Nick and Ina O'Nale.
He was a veteran of World War II and Korea, serving with the 3rd Armored Division, participating in combat action in Northern France, the Rhineland, Central Europe and the Ardennes, during the Battle of the Bulge. His decorations included the Bronze Star, the Army Commendation medal, the Army Good Conduct medal, the American Defense medal, the American Campaign medal, the European/Africian/Middle East medal, the World War II Victory medal, the Korean Service medal and the United Nations Service medal.
In his civilian life, he worked as a revenue auditor for the Arkansas Forestry Commission and was the former Director of the Arkansas Assessment Coordination Division. Indulging his passion for both Arkansas and history, he was actively involved with the Scott County Historical Society, which led him to author several books about Arkansas and Scott County.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Muriel Margaret "Peggy" O'Nale, and his grandparents John Simpson O'Nale and Susannah 'Susie' Godwin O'Nale.
He is survived by his children Colleen Haney of Binghamton, NY; Kathleen O'Nale of Tarpon Springs, FL; Maureen and Richard Dennis of Vilonia, AR; Eileen O'Nale of Nashville, TN; Eugene and Barbara O'Nale of Kapolei, HI; Sean and Cindy O'Nale of Beebe, AR; and Dean and Michelle O'Nale of Palm Harbor, FL; as well as a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren and many friends.
There was a private memorial service and interment at the family cemetery in Harvey, Arkansas.
