MELBOURNE, Fla. - Aura Charlene Kendall, age 83, wife of Major General (Ret) Maurice (Maury) Kendall, passed away on Saturday, May 7, 2005, in Rockledge, FL.

She was the daughter of Raymond and Noma Burke Gross, reared in Bloomington, and graduated from Bloomington HS.

In 1942, Charlene married Maury, a student at Indiana University. She was a devoted Army wife for the next 36 years, living at numerous military posts in the United States and overseas. Among the first dependent wives arriving in Germany following WWII, she also accompanied him in Japan, Okinawa, and Brazil. Involved in local military activities, she was the president of several Officer's Wives Clubs and a consistent volunteer in service activities and the Red Cross.

In 1978, Charlene and Maury retired and moved to Satellite Beach, FL, where they enjoyed sailing, travel, family history research, and frequent visits by family and friends.

In addition to her husband of 62 years, she is survived by a daughter, Karen R. Parker of Vienna, VA; a son, Colonel (Ret) John M. Kendall of University Place, WA; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. She was predeceased in death by a sister, Martha L. Scully of Bloomington, and survived by brother, Carl "Jim" Gross of Bloomington; sister, Peggy J. Ward of Indianapolis; and numerous loving nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held at the Fort Myer Chapel Friday, June 3rd, 2005, at 3:00 p.m. at Arlington National Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the Military Officer's Association of America, Cape Canaveral Chapter Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 254708, PAFB, FL 32925-4708, for the permanent Aura Charlene Kendall Merit Scholarship granted to selected descendants of active and retired uniformed service personnel.
