He served in the United States Army and was a veteran of the Korean War. Upon his return, he married his first passion and love, his wife, Norma Rader Cottle, who preceded him in death in January of 2003.
He retired from Island Creek Coal Company with several years of service as a heavy equipment operator. He was a member of the American Polled Hereford Association and served as President of the WV Polled Hereford Association.
His second passion was The Cottle Brothers Farm, where he took great pride in raising top-notch cattle and Christmas trees.
He spent endless hours in his rose and vegetable gardens just enjoying watching things grow, and he thoroughly enjoyed the ability to share with his friends and neighbors.
Surviving him are his family, Marsha Ann and Mark, Melinda Lou and Jeff; his best friend and brother, Joe J. Cottle; several nieces and nephews who were "the boys" he never had; and his extended family, Ross and B. J. Gates.
The family wishes to extend their deepest and sincere appreciation and gratitude to their care providers, Carol, Angie and Miss Sparks, who gave and provided him with the utmost wonderful and loving care a family could ever be blessed with.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, February 14, 2010, in the White Funeral Home, Summersville, with the Rev. Calvin McCutcheon officiating. Interment will follow in the Walker Memorial Park, Summersville.
Friends may call at the funeral home on Saturday from 6 to 8 p.m.
