Born to Alfred Moore Scales and Martha Ann Martin Scales in Rockingham Co.,N.C. He was the 4th of 7 children.He received a B.A. degree in 1855 from Univ. of North Carolina. In his lifetime he was a civil engineer, Major in C.S.A., R.R. contractor and farmer. On 22 May 1861, he married Mary S. "Minnie" Lord. They had 9 children. On 9 Nov 1865 he received "U.S. Pardons Under Amnesty" issued by President Johnson for having participated in the Civil War. In 1880C. he is in Knox Co.,Tn. From 1900 to 1910 he was farming in Salisbury,Rowan,NC. In 1919 Minnie died, and he moved in with his widowed daughter, Minnie Henderson. In 1921 he died in Greensboro, Guilford, NC. The informant on his Death Certificate was W.S.Clary,husband of Nathaniel Eldridge's daughter Corinne Scales Clary.
