Born into the pioneer family who believed in the cardinal principles of honesty, justice, and respect for God's laws and for mankind, Nelms Mainer never departed from these tenets implanted in his heart by a conscientious father and mother. His devoted wife, Mattie Kyle Williams, born January 2, 1881 at Augusta, TX, shared his ideals, his aims, and his every desire. Nelms Mainer was educated in the Lovelady Schools, Sam Houston Normal, Baylor University, TX University, Southern Seminary, and Southwestern Seminary with Masters' degree in liberal arts and in theology. He bought a newspaper from the Reverend Frick when he finished Baylor and edited it for a few years. Then he pastured the Baptist church at Lovelady when the first brick church was erected. He was pastor of the First Baptist Church in Grapeland at the same time every other Sunday. He served on the School Board in Lovelady before becoming Superintendent, which he served for fourteen years. During this time,the schools consolidated with some schools around, accreditation was attained, and the brick building was erected. After leaving the school system, Mr. Mainer engaged in the grocery business with his wife and continued his ranching. He served as teacher of the Men's Bible Class at the Baptist church for over fifty years. He was a student of world affairs and wrote articles on many subjects for newspapers, and magazines. He wrote a history of the schools in Lovelady, a history of Lovelady, and of Houston County men in the Civil War, as well as many other subjects.
