President of Peru. Belaunde Terry served two non-consecutive terms as President of Peru. He was a member of a well-known political family in Peru. Belaunde Terry started in the field of architecture. His start in politics started in the 1940s when he founded the National Democratic Front, which later became the National Front of Democratic Youth and then Popular Action. Belaunde Terry served in parliament from 1945-1948. He first ran for president in 1956 and had a surprise showing in his loss that year. Belaunde Terry was first elected president in 1963. During this first term, his program of land reform and road building to open the Amazon River valley was successful, but other parts of his domestic program was blocked by an opposition controlled Congress. Belaunde Terry supported the United States and its Alliance for Progress program. He was deposed in 1968 by a military junta after public protest over an agreement he made with an American company (International Petroleum Company) on the development of oil fields in northern Peru. Belaunde Terry went into exile during the 1970s, returning to Peru in 1976. In 1980 he was again elected president. His second term was marred by high inflation, huge foreign debt, and violent attacks by the Shining Path terrorist group. Belaunde Terry was soundly defeated for another term in 1985. He later became a Senator.
