B. Worth "Poss" Powell died Thursday, February 11, 2010. Poss was born in Irvine, KY on November 21, 1925 to the late Garnett Powell and Lelia Wilson.

After graduating from Irvine High School, he worked for one year at Hercules Powder in Chattanoo, TN before enlisting in the United States Navy. During WW II he served on the USS Kaweah in the North Atlantic and then joined occupying forces in Germany.

He graduated from the University of Chattanooga in 1949, where he was a member of Kappa Sigma fraternity. Poss enjoyed music of all types and during his college senior year he organized weekly big band dance concerts at Ruby Falls. After college he joined Provident Insurance Company, where his varied career spanned 33 years. His contributions at Provident included work on early mainframe computers for automated data processing, as well as developing and leading the Internal Audit Department, the position from which he retired in 1982.

He was a member of Brainerd United Methodist Church and served on the Board of Directors of the Salvation Army.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Wayne Powell and sister, Hazel Fleissner.

Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Elizabeth "Bettye" Hudson Powell of Chattanoog, TN; their sons Randall Powell of Collierville, TN, Jim Powell of Hixson, TN, and Bob Powell of Denver, CO; twin brother Ward Powell of Pensacola, FL; and grandchildren Amy Murray and Brian Powell.

A Memorial service will be held at 11:30 AM Monday, February 15, 2010 at Heritage Funeral Home, with Rev. Jim Powell officiating. A private family interment will take place at Chattanooga National Cemetery at a later date.

The family will receive friends from 10:30 – 11:30 A.M. Monday at Heritage Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 7454 East Brainerd Road, Chattanooga, TN 37421.

Visitations: 10:30AM to 11:30AM on Monday, February 15th, 2010 at Heritage Funeral Home Chapel - Ft. Oglethorpe, GA.
