Sudanese Statesman. He served as the 3rd President of Sudan from June 10, 1965 to May 25, 1969. He also served as the Prime Minister of Sudan from January 6, 1954 to July 5, 1956. He was educated at Gordon Memorial College at Khartoum and at the American University of Beirut. In 1940, he became president of the Graduates' General Congress. At first, the Congress was concerned primarily with educational and social reforms, but it later opposed the British administration of the Sudan and instead supported the Sudan's union with Egypt. In 1943, following a split within the Congress, he organized the Ashigga party to oppose the British. Five years later, he was arrested for opposing the British proposal for self-governance. In 1952, he was named president of the National Unionist Party, which was victorious in the elections the next year. He became prime minister in 1954 and went on to serve for two years before stepping down in 1956. He remained an integral part of the NUP as a military government came to power in 1958. In 1964, he was again named president of the party and a year later, appointed president of the country. He went on to serve for the next five years before ousted in a military coup in 1969.
