David James Byrd married Alice Catherine Champion in Columbus County, North Carolina, 15 April 1877. Alice Catherine died shortly after giving birth to their youngest daughter. D J Byrd and his daughters moved to Wilmington where he worked as a laborer. He disappeared in April 1903. According to a Wilmington Star newspaper article from the time, he and his youngest daughter had gone to buy some provisions. He sent the young girl home, and was not seen after that. About a month after he disappeared, he was found drowned in the river. Since his family had moved back to Columbus County and the body needed to be buried immediately, the coroner had him interred in Oak Grove cemetery, which often served as a burial ground for paupers and those found drowned in the river.
