He was born Milton Lafayette Duncan on September 10, 1856 in Mississippi. In 1877 he married Miss Louella Coleman McKelvey, Mississippi 1856, daughter of William Randolph McKelvey, Alabama and Sarah E. Wall McKelvey, Alabama.
They farmed in Lee County, Mississippi and began their family there; but around 1883-1884, they migrated westward through East Texas and into Texas Hill Country. Finally they settled in Mason County, Texas, where they remained into the 1920s. When Louella's health failed due to pellegra, she was moved to Howard County, Texas, where she could receive appropriate care until her death in 1926. M.L. retained their home in Mason County until about 1930, when he relocated to the Rio Grand Valley to be near daughter Willie D. Beaver and her family.

According to the 1900 US Census of Mason County, Texas, only four of the nine children born to M.L. and Louella survived childhood. Their issue included:

1. Minnie Ella Duncan, b: 1879 in Lee County, Mississippi d: Unknown
2. Charles Emmitt "Charley" Duncan, b: May 1884 in Kaufman County, Texas
3. Infant Duncan, b: May 1884 d: May 1884 in Kaufman County, Texas
4. Mary Ella Duncan (Massey), b: Sep 1886 in Texas
5. Willie Duncan (Beaver), b: Sept 1893 in Mason County, Texas
6. Maggie Duncan, b: May 1896 in Mason County, Texas

M.L. was living in Mission, Hidalgo County, Texas at the time of his death from complications of chronic colitis. According to his death certificate, his remains were interred in Mission, Texas.*

His death certificate states that burial was to be in Mission, Texas, but a specific cemetery was not named. Laurel Hill Cemetery was chosen, because M.L.'s son-in-law, James Berry Beaver is buried there.
