PFC Vernon, Company E, 2nd Battalion, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division, was last observed being taken prisoner, while fighting enemy forces in North Korea. On February 19, 1954, his status was changed to presumed Killed in Action Remains Not Recovered. Vernon was awarded the Bronze Star for Valor & Puprle Heart. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing.
