Hazel Arlene Short, age 95, of Shawnee, Kansas, passed away Friday, January 22, 2010, at the Kansas City Hospice House, Kansas City, Missouri. Funeral services will be 11:00 A.M., Tuesday, January 26, 2010, at the Clinton United Methodist Church with burial in Englewood Cemetery, Clinton. Family will receive friends one hour before the service on Tuesday at the church. Family suggests contributions to Kansas City Hospice House, Hereford Project or American Red Cross and may be left at the Vansant-Mills Chapel, Clinton. She attended school and graduated from high school and attended college at Northwest Missouri State College in Maryville, Missouri graduating in l939. She taught school for forty-two years in Iowa and Missouri. In l939 she married David F. Suetterlin and to this union two children were born, Kenneth David and Sue Ellen. After being widowed in l962 she taught at the University of Missouri in Columbia and the College of the Ozarks at Point Lookout, Missouri. In l971 Alrene began a career with the University of Missouri Extension Service in Clinton, Missouri.
On July 27, 1974, she married Frankie Short who preceded her in death on June 29, 2004.
In l975 Arlene was selected the Outstanding Teacher in Who's Who in American Educational Women. Arlene retired from the Extension Service in l982.
She was an active member of the United Methodist Church all of her life and the United Methodist Women all of her adult life, serving as an officer several times. She was also a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, Epsilon Si and Kappa Phi Nu Sororities and the Business and Professional Women.
Among survivors include her daughter, Sue Gardner and husband, Bruce of Shawnee, Kansas; her son, Kenneth D. Suetterlin and wife, Bonnie of Marshalltown, Iowa; two stepsons, Frankie Eugene Short of Independence, Missouri and Bobby Joe Short and wife, Lucy of Kansas City, Missouri as well as eight grandchildren, three great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.
