David was raised on his family's tobacco farm in Elm city, NC in the small close knit community of Temperance Hall where he was a member of the Temperance Hall United Methodist Church. He received his high school diploma from Oakridge Military Institute in Oakridge, NC where he was a proud member of the elite Gold Star Platoon precision drill team and rifle team. He worked on the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad in Rocky Mount, NC while attending Atlantic Christian College, later transferring to NC State where he earned his Bachelor's degree in Applied Mathematics in 1962. David's work encompassed many noteworthy and important contributions to Science and Technology and also to National Security. Those achievements included special contributions to many camera systems that were flown on NASA missions, some to the moon and Mars. The NASA S-190 Skylab six lens multi-spectral camera was cited in the Proceedings of the International Congress of Photogrammetry and Remote sensing in 1972. David's unique contributions were recognized by ITEK with numerous prestigious awards including the ITEK Inventor's Award, the "Master Lens Designer" award, the National Inventors Day, February 11, Hall of Fame Award and a special ITEK appreciation award for the NASA-ITEK large format camera program. Other contributions included support for the Strategic Defense Initiative ("Star Wars"), the Viking Mars Lander Camera, and Corona Satellite Reconnaissance Camera.
