GREENSBORO, NC — John Patrick McManus, 85, known as "Mac" to his friends, died Monday, December 28, 2009, in his adopted hometown of Greensboro.
Born in Fall River, Massachusetts, John became a Southerner at heart after his move here in 1950.
He was a proud World War II veteran, having served as a glider pilot in the Pacific theatre with the 82nd Airborne.
John was a skilled salesman in the cosmetic, fragrance, and clothing business for over 30 years. He opened the first Baskin-Robbins franchise in Greensboro, which still operates today. Additionally, he created a great restaurant here known as The Chase.
He thought he had retired to Destin, Florida, but became active with retailers Polo Ralph Lauren and, later, Joseph Banks Clothiers.
John was an obedient server of the gospel and sacrament at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, where he was interred in the columbarium. Services were held there at 2 pm on Monday, January 4, 2010.
He is survived by Lois, his bride of 62 years, along with his brother, Robert, of Contoocook, New Hampshire; his children are his daughter, Merrill of Destin, FL; and son, Mark (Cindy); and grandchildren, Alaina and Maureen, all of Charlotte. He also leaves nieces and nephews in Massachusetts and New Hampshire.
