B. Franklin was born in a small town called Era, which is no longer there. He had a twin sister named Francis. Shortly after Franklin and Francis were born, their family moved to Missouri where they grew up. He and his brother William moved to Texas to work as teamsters, when they were young men.

Franklin went from Texas to SLC, Utah in the Preston Thomas Co. in 1853. He was sent to settle Grantsville about 1855, then moved to West Summer Creek in the spring of 1857. They moved to Fort Herriman in the fall of 1857 and then moved back to Grantsville again in the spring of 1858.

They went to Texas in the fall of 1859 and then back to Coleville, Utah in 1860. He moved to St. George in about the fall of 1862 where he lived until about 1880 when he moved to American Fork.

Black Hawk War: He enrolled in a company commanded by David M. Cannon as a resident of Washington Co. at the age of 34 years and 31 days. During the Black Hawk War, on 10 Jan 1866, they made an expedition to Pipe Springs. The papers were signed by his son Benj. F. Coates, Jr. 20 Dec 1909.
