PLEASANT GARDEN, NC — Helen Anderson Raper, 89, of Pleasant Garden and Atlanta, GA, died on January 11, 2010.
Funeral services were held at 11 am on Friday, January 15, at Pleasant Garden United Methodist Church, with visitation following in the Shuman Hall. Interment was private.
The Guilford native obtained her nursing education at NC Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem and was a practicing RN in hospitals, family practice, and addiction treatment for fifty years.
She was married in 1950 to Carlton Raper. She devoted herself to her husband and the rearing of her two sons, but also found time to do volunteer work for the Red Cross and Hospice.
She spearheaded her church's Mobile Meals program and chaired it for 22 years. A member of Pleasant Garden United Methodist Church, she was active in Sunday School, choir and United Methodist Women, and participated in a mission to Ketchikan, Alaska, where she helped rebuild a local church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Carlton Raper; parents, Rufus and Hattie Smith Anderson, and brother, Clifford Anderson.
Survivors include sons, Andy Raper (wife Vivian Wright); Bruce Raper (life-partner Mike Nelson) all of Atlanta, GA; brothers, Robert Anderson (Doris) of Kernersville, David Anderson (Elaine) of Lakeland, FL; sister, Rose Anderson Byrd of Lumberton; several nieces and nephews.
