Thomas Leslie Metcalf was born March 22nd, 1890 in Halbert, a rural community near the Sabine River sixteen miles southeast of Center in southeastern Shelby County, Texas. Thomas the son of Elish Henry "Bud" Metcalf and Martha McCarter "Mattie" Dean, married Susie Jane Wilburn the daughter of Felix Galimon Wilburn and Rosa Victoria Eddins.

Thomas and Susie were married on December 3rd, 1911 in New Harmony a tiny rural community located thirteen miles east-southeast of Center in eastern Shelby County, Texas. They had six children together, two daughters and four sons. All four of their sons served in the military during WWII, and both daughters married men that served in the military during WWll.
