Victor D. Sletten, 82, of Argyle, MN, passed away on Friday, January 8, 2010, in Henderson, NV, at the home of his daughter.

Victor Duane Sletten was born on April 22, 1927, in rural Churchs Ferry, ND. He was the son of Henry and Hilda (Welo) Sletten. Victor grew up and attended school in Churchs Ferry. At the age of 17, Victor enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He was inducted at Fort Snelling and sent to the Naval Training Center in Great Lakes, IL. He was assigned to the USS Landing Craft Support (3)#1. After being honorably discharged on June 8, 1946, he continued his education in Churchs Ferry, graduating from high school in 1947. Victor received his Bachelor of Science in education from Minot State Teachers College in 1952. He later received his Masters of Education and a Specialist degree in School Administration from the University of North Dakota. Victor began his career in education in Makoti, ND, and then Devils Lake, ND, where he taught social studies, science and math. He became superintendent of schools in Churchs Ferry in 1958 and later at Pembina and Westhope, ND, before moving to Argyle in 1966, where he was school superintendent until retiring in 1989.

Victor married Doris Ruth Viger on December 2, 1949, in Minot, ND. Doris died on July 12, 2009. Surviving members are two daughters, Shoneen (Daryl) Wagner, Argyle, MN; and Rennae (Nasser) Daneshvary, Henderson, NV; one son, Richard (Ellen) Sletten, Shoreview, MN; one granddaughter, Erika (Tony) Riopelle, Melbourne, FL; and four grandsons, Michael Wagner, Melbourne, FL; Richard Sletten II, Flagstaff, AZ; Andrew Sletten, Washington, DC; and Thomas Sletten, Shoreview, MN. He has one great-granddaughter, Nicole Riopelle, Melbourne, FL. Also surviving are his sister, Ruth Myhre, Devils Lake, ND; and brothers, Harold, Riverside, CA; Robert, Devils Lake, ND; and Milford, Galesburg, MI; along with many nieces and nephews.

Victor was a member of the Argyle American Legion and Our Saviors Free Lutheran Church, where he had served as secretary and president. While he was superintendent in Argyle, he held several offices on district and region committees. Victor was proudest of his family and their accomplishments. He was a sports enthusiast. He played basketball in high school and refereed and coached basketball in Devils Lake. He received great joy in watching his son and grandchildren participate in sports. When he retired, he was able to spend more time golfing.

Preceding Victor in death were his wife, Doris; parents, Henry and Hilda; brothers, Willis and Bernard; and sisters, Enid and Fern.

FUNERAL SERVICE: 11:00 AM on Friday, January 15, 2010, at Our Saviors Free Lutheran Church.

VISITATION: One hour before services at the church.

INTERMENT: Edmore Cemetery, Edmore, ND.
