Martha Jane Jackson married first John Ezekial Shell in Sumter County, Alabama on 26 Nov. 1865 [Marriage Vol. 2, p. 549]. John died 22 June 1872 in Limestone County, Texas leaving Martha with children, Anna Belle Shell and Charles W. Shell. The date and place of her marriage to John Carr has not been found, but may have been Limestone County; early records for Limestone are no longer extant, so this is supposition. Following John Carr's death, Martha received a CSA widows pension based on John Shell's Confederate service in the 5th Alabama Infantry.
