He grew up in Maiden, NC, and played football at Maiden High School for the Blue Devils. He was an Eagle Scout, and coached football and basketball at Hickory Grove Methodist Church, Mint Hill Athletic Association, Porter Ridge Middle School, and Piedmont Middle School. He worked as a salesman in the plumbing supply business.
He is survived by his wife of nearly 21 years, Emily (Williams) Abernathy. They were married on September 13, 1987.
Other survivors include his father, Gerald Robert "Jug" Abernathy, Sr.; mother, Marian (Shuford) Abernathy; son, Preston Robert Abernathy; daughters, Ashley Leason Abernathy & Jane Alice Abernathy; brother and sister-in-law, Michael Eric & Eva Abernathy; step nephew and niece, Lee Smith & Amanda King, and many other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Claude Fay & Kate Burke Abernathy and Thomas Franklin & Bernice "Polly" Setzer Shuford.
Interment followed funeral services conducted at the Lakeview Baptist Church, Monroe, NC, Rev. Steve Jirgal, Pastor, presided.
