Samuel J. Bird was the son of James Bird and Frances "Fanny" Mason. He was the second son of six children and the namesake of his Grandpa Samuel Bird, and probably his father, James Bird. He was born in Franklin, Virginia and married Christiana Ader (original spelling was EADER) in 1811 in Stokes, North Carolina.
Samuel served in the War of 1812 serving under Captain Lowry's CO in the NC MILITIA.
