'Babe' Nina Cornford
"Babe" Nina Cornford, 87, of La Grande, died Friday, Sept. 23, 1994, at Grande Ronde Hospital. A service for Mrs. Cornford will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Stake Center, 12th Street and Gekeler Lane. Committal and interment will follow at the Hillcrest Cemetery. Friends may call Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Daniels Valley Funeral Chapel. Mrs. Cornford was born on Jan. 27, 1907, to William L. and Nina (White) Dodson in Omaha, Neb. On Dec. 7, 1929, she married W. Earl Cornford in Falls City, Neb. During World War II, she worked as a welder in Torrance, Calif. For 11 years the Cornfords lived in Kanab, Utah. They then moved to La Grande where they lived for two years before moving to Tucson, Ariz. They returned to La Grande in April 1991. Mrs. Cornford was a member of the First Ward of the LDS Church. She enjoyed bingo, crocheting and playing card games. She played the trombone and loved to dance and sing. Survivors include her husband, W. Earl Cornford of La Grande; sons and daughters-in-law, Robert "Bob" and Bobbie Cornford of Summerville, and Bill and Maxine Cornford of Kayenta, Ariz.; grandchildren, Darrell and Brian Cornford of Kemmerer, Wyo.; Penny Madore of Tucson, Ariz.; Sherry Nantz of Imbler; Walter Cornford of Mountain Home, Idaho, and Emmett and Devin Cornford of La Grande; 20 grandchildren; brother William "Bill" Dodson of The Dalles; and other relatives and friends. Those who wish may make contributions in Mrs. Cornford's memory to the Oregon Cancer Society, 0330 S.W. Curry, and Portland 97201.
