Samuel Jenkins Porter was born in White River Township, Hamilton County, Indiana, to John (1810-1849; memorial # 112887645) and Eliza Jenkins Porter (1815-1882; memorial # 43880211), who were both born in Ohio.

They married 11 Nov 1834 in Marion County, Ohio, and had their first child, Tilghman Porter, in Oct 1835 in Frankfort, Ross County, Ohio. Their next child, Catharine, was born in White River Township, Hamilton County, Indiana 1838/1840.

The US 1840 Census for John and Eliza Porter shows them residing in White River Township, Hamilton County, Indiana. They reported that their household consisted of four members: two adults (one male, one female) under the age of 29 years; and two children (one male and one female) under the age of five years. One adult worked in agriculture.

Samuel had two Porter sisters: Catharine (1838/1840-?) and Amanda O Porter Karr (1847-1896; memorial # 44704043). He had three Porter brothers: Tilghman (1835-1904; memorial # 45997095), William (1842-1924; burial site unknown), and John Albert (1849-1938; memorial # 45997058).

While Samuel's Death Certificate listed his birth date as 18 Jun 1850, every US Census he appeared on listed it as 1845 (one as Jun 1845). Another Census listed it as "about 1846". The Daughters of the American Revolution also have the 1845 date. Samuel's gravestone is engraved with the 1845 birth date.

Samuel's father died in 1849, when he was four, and his mother re-married to James Deakyne (1811-1870; memorial # 43880186), on 10 Nov 1851 in Hamilton County, Indiana. James was a widower with ten children, and he and Eliza had two daughters of their own, Rebecca and Nancy. So Samuel Porter had five Porter siblings, ten Deakyne step-siblings and two Deakyne half-siblings.

Samuel married first, to Margaret A "Maggie" Albertson, who was born 28 Jan 1852, and died 05 Feb 1875 (memorial # 44988971). They married in Hamilton County, Indiana, on 15 Oct 1871. They had two daughters. Selvey, their first child, lived 5 months and 5 days (memorial # 44988962). Maggie and Selvey are buried in Cicero Cemetery, Cicero, Hamilton County.

Their second daughter was Effie Blanche, born Nov 1874 by the Census, but 1875 by her gravestone. Effie was listed on the 05 Jun US 1880 Census with Samuel and his second wife, Elizabeth Teresa "Lizzie" Forkner Porter. She was six years old at the time. Lizzie was her step-mother.

Effie married Clifton Gilmore White in Hamilton County. There are two marriage records: a Marriage Bond and a Marriage Record in Apr 1874, and a marriage date of Nov 1874 listed on the Census. They moved to Oklahoma City, where they were buried in Rose Hill Cemetery after their deaths in 1928 (he; memorial # 49012871) and 1929 (she; memorial # 47738583).

According to the US 1900 Census, Samuel and his second wife had six children, three surviving: Ulin Lilia "Eula" (1882-1963; burial site unknown), Merrill Maude "Betty" (1887-1965; memorial # 45997101), and Bertha Elizabeth (1893-1883; memorial # 146359372).
