Col. Robert G. Black, 40, was an eight year veteran of the Rocky Ripple Police Department. Black along with Sergeant Bryan Northern, also of the Rocky Ripple Police Department, were shot while working security at an apartment complex on the northeast side of Indianapolis. The two officers had chased a man to an apartment after he caused a disturbance in the parking lot. They knocked on the door and announced themselves when they were shot by another man completely unrelated to the suspect they were chasing. Black died at the scene from his injuries. It was later discovered that the man who shot the officers was currently wanted on warrants. The suspect who killed both officers was apprehended two days later. Northern died several weeks later.
