The daughter of Michael and Margaret Ott, she was educated in rural schools near Festina, Iowa. On Feb 22, 1909 she married Charles Berst Sr, at St. Lucas. They lived on a farm near Little Turkey and in 1939 they purchased a tavern in Little Turkey which they operated until 1955.

She was a member of the Catholic Assumption Church of Little Turkey and a member of the Rosary Society.
