ROBERT JOHN COOPER
Robert John Cooper, widely-known retired farmer, died at his home in Winfield at 4 o'clock Saturday morning, May 16, at the age of 85 years.
Mr. Cooper was born in New Harmony January 7, 1857. He was the son of the late Dr. James A. Cooper and Florence Dale Owen Cooper and was the last surviving grandson of Robert Dale Owen. His mother died when he was six years old, after which time he lived in the homes of Robert Dale Owen, Auntie Humphrey, his father, and his grandfather John Cooper. At the age of fourteen he moved to Terre Haute where he lived with an aunt, Elizabeth Cooper Young.
During Mr. Cooper's boyhood in New Harmony he attended school in the old school house along with Mrs. Pauline Rileyre, Rockie Rawlings, Will Boren, Mary Emily Fauntleroy, Harry Slater, Charlie sibley and Miss Annie Ford. He also attended a private school in New Harmony taught by Mrs. Robert Dale Owen under the Pestalozian system. He was later educated at the Terre Haute Normal College and the United States Naval Academy, Annapolis, Maryland.
The early years of his manhood were spent on the ranch of his uncle William Cooper in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains in California where he became a skilled horseman. On November 7, 1911 he was married to Martha Shephard Mental at El Centro, California.
Mr. Cooper was known as a man of never-ending enthusiasm and energy. He was a charitable man of fine character and unexcelled morale. He was christened in the old Episcopal church in New Harmony and was a member of the Episcopal church at Terre Haute.
Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at the Shoultz Funeral Parlor, Rev. George Smith, Rector of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church officiating, with burial at Maple Hill Cemetery. Pall bearers included George Hein, Will York, James Elkins, Ezra T. Shephard, Jack Camp and Ishmael Viets.
