Joseph Wilson "Joe" Cooper, 90 year old lifetime Checotah resident, died peacefully, Saturday, December 19, 2009. He was born Thursday, August 28, 1919 in Checotah, Oklahoma to Jess and Susie Rouell Cooper. Joe grew up in Checotah and attended Shady Grove School. After school, he began working construction. He met, fell in love, and married Edna Harris on April 15, 1940 in Saylor Bottom (near Keota, Oklahoma). They moved to many areas before settling back in Checotah. Joe worked on construction crews building roads and highways. He retired in the late 70's. Joe enjoyed being outdoors, mowing the grass, and just tinkering on many different projects. He was a faithful member of the First Assembly of God Church in Checotah. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and friend. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. He was preceded in death by his Parents; One brother & six Sisters; and a son-n-law, Troy Clay. He is lovingly survived by his loving wife of 69 years, Edna of the home; Children, Wayne Cooper and his wife Alice of California, Barbara Clay of Checotah, and Phyllis Smith and her husband James of Texas; Five Grandchildren, Bryan Clay and his wife Laurie, Justin Clay and his wife Stephanie, Dewayna Marucut and her husband Frank, Jeff Cooper, & Kathrine Cooper and her husband Anthony; Fourteen Great-grandchildren, Dylan, Hannah, Dalton Clay, Jonathan Cooper, Amanda, Rachel, & Megan Marucut, Ruth, Leah, Benjamin, & Luke Cooper, Mattison & Grady Clay, & Nicole Holguin; many nieces, nephews, other extended family and a host of friends. Funeral Services will be 10 AM Tuesday, December 22, 2009 at the First Assembly of God of Checotah with Reverend Paul Butler and Reverend Larry Hatfield, officiating. Committal prayers and Interment will follow in Greenlawn Cemetery with Rick Smith, Bobby Frame, Tim Frame, Roger Harris, Justin Clay, & Bryan Clay serving as Casket Bearers. Ed Helton, Lee Stidham, Randy McIver, Bill Thomas, & Junior Minnick will serve as Honorary Casket Bearers. The family of Joe Cooper entrusted his care and services to John & Kim Garrett of Garrett Family Funeral Home & Cremation Service
