Josiah Briggs Cobaugh was born in Shippensburg, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, April 15, 1832, the son of Adam & Catherine Ann Croft Cobaugh. He married Mary Elizabeth Klink September 22, 1853, in Newville, Cumberland County; children: George (b. @1854), Catherine (b. 12/??/56), William (b. @1860), Rebecca (b. @1863), Jennie A. (b. @1864), Charles Klink (b. 12/??/65), Nean Cora (b. 04/02/69), Harry Arthur (b. 08/05/73), and Leontine F. (b. 02/24/76). In 1860, he was a tinsmith living in Newville, Cumberland County.

A Civil War veteran, he enrolled in Harrisburg September 6, 1864, as 1st lieutenant of Co. H, 202nd Pennsylvania Infantry, promoted to captain February 6, 1865, and honorably discharged with his company August 3, 1865.

He died in St. Joseph, Buchanan County, Missouri. He had two brothers, Henry Augustus and William David, who were veterans, both buried in Arlington National Cemetery.

Josiah stood 5' 11" tall and had black hair and brown eyes.
