Sr Mary Chrysostom Diebels, SSND

Sister Chrys Diebels, on the English faculty at Mount Mary College for more than half a century, died of natural causes Saturday at Marian Catholic Center. She was 95.
Three decades ago, a profile in a magazine published by the School Sisters of Notre Dame contained this description: "When Sister taught writing classes, her genuine delight in the particular quality of a student's work made each grow and glow and write again."

She was born Alice Elizabeth Diebels on July 23, 1904, in De Pere, the second youngest of 10 children of Louis and Elizabeth Diebels. Three of her sisters, all deceased, also were members of the School Sisters of Notre Dame.

She graduated from Our Lady of Lourdes High School in Marinette and received her bachelor's degree at St. Mary's College in Prairie du Chien before the school moved to Milwaukee and was renamed Mount Mary.
Diebels became a novice in 1930, the same year she earned her master's degree from Marquette University. Her religious name was Sister Mary Chrysostom, which she later shortened to Sister Chrys. ("Sister is unconcerned about creating an image," according to the magazine article.)

Diebels was on the faculty from 1931 until her retirement in 1985, taking time off to earn her doctorate in English at Catholic University in Washington. For 25 years she headed the English department at Mount Mary. She also represented southeastern Wisconsin on the first executive board of the Wisconsin Council of Teachers of English.

Diebels was known for her addiction to detective stories, but she scandalized purists by perusing the beginning and ending before reading the entire story.

Gleaned from The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel Oct 31, 1999

Beloved sister of Sr M Luela Diebels, SSND, Sr M Cosmas Diebels, SSND and Sr M Damian Diebels, SSND.
