He was born on May 3, 1935, in Nelson County, a son of the late Horace Almond Fitzgerald and Cornelia Ore Fitzgerald.
He was a member of Clifford Baptist Church in Amherst, Virginia.
Jim retired from Newport News Shipbuilding Company. He was in Security Department 015, where he serviced 36 years of loyal and dedicated service. He served two tours of Duty in the Army in the Korean War. He received the Good Conduct Medal. He loved his county with honest and faithful service.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Dorothy Jane Williams Fitzgerald; as well as a sister, Christine Virginia Snead.
He is survived his wife, Francis Snead Fitzgerald of Lovingston, Virginia; two sons, James E. "Jimmy" Fitzgerald and his wife, Norma L. Fitzgerald, of Gloucester, Virginia, and David W. Fitzgerald and his wife, Cassie Fitzgerald, of Blacksburg, Virginia; a sister, Pearl F. Bryant of Shipman; and a stepson, Herman Williams Jr. of Arrington, Virginia; and a daughter, Debbie J. Cooper of Indiana. He was the proud grandfather of six grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and one step grandson.
A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, December 15, 2009, at Clifford Baptist Church in Amherst with the Dr. Reverend Michael Fitzgerald officiating. Interment will follow at the Mount Cove Cemetery in Lovingston. Military Rites will be accorded by V.F.W. Post #7701 of Colleen.
The family will receive friends from 7 until 8:30 p.m. Monday, December 14, 2009, at the funeral home and suggests that memorials take the form of contributions to Clifford Baptist Church, P.O. Box 88, Clifford, Virginia 24533.
