Bert's crew was part of a mission where 8 Wellington bombers were sent to attack the Dortmund-Ems Canal at Lingen, Germany. His aircraft, Wellington aircraft #Z1657, was engaged by an enemy night-fighter during the raid, resulting in them jettisoning their bombs. Despite the bomber being badly shot up by fighter cannon fire, that resulted in the rear gunner being injured and Bert being mortally wounded, the bomber was able to return and land safely back at base in England.
