William had been elected to the NC State Legislature from Cleveland County in 1856. He enlisted as a private in Co. F, 56th NC Regiment, Confederate States Army. After 14 months, he was transferred to the 38th NC Regiment, with the rank of Lieutenant, and was soon promoted to Captain of the Company. He was paroled at Appomattox Court House in command of his company.
After the War, Captain and Mrs. Blanton moved to Marion, McDowell Co., where he became a merchant. He was elected to the Legislature from McDowell Co. in 1888. W. M. and Josephine Setzer Blanton had five sons: Charles David Parham Blanton (1860-1894), William Pinkney Beauregard Blanton (1862-1894, m. Minnie Neal), Josephus Blanton (1867-1937, m. Martha Rhoda "Mattie" Shuford), John Dobbins Blanton (1870-1960, m. Nancy Davis Fleming), and Albert H. Blanton (1873-1917, m. Charlotte Walker).
