Josephine Setzer was born in Iredell County, NC, a daughter of David Setzer and his first wife Eleanor Sherrill. She married William Miller Blanton (1832-1916) in March of 1859. He was a son of Charles Blanton and his wife Julia Hamrick.

William had been elected to the NC State Legislature from Cleveland County in 1856. He enlisted as a private in Co. F, 56th NC Regiment, Confederate States Army. After 14 months, he was transferred to the 38th NC Regiment, with the rank of Lieutenant, and was soon promoted to Captain of the Company.
