Services Sunday for Gainesville Musician

Mrs. Edna Shell, longtime Gainesville musician, died at her home, 312 N. Denton St. Friday at 6:15 p.m. after a lengthy illness. She was a native of Gainesville.

Services will be conducted Sunday at 2 p.m. in First Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Leal Dobesh will officiate with intermet in Fairview Cemetery under the direction of Geo. J. Carroll & Son Funeral Home.

Bearers will be Eldon Willett, Glenn Bell, Wilson Kaden, Charles Rosenberg, Charles Cheaney and Winfred Sherrill.

Mrs. Shell is the former Edna Carter, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. S. L. Carter. Her husband, Carey C. Shell, organized and directed the well known Gainesville Boys Band in the 1920s. She was a director of the band at the Gainesville State School for Girls at one time, and composed the arrangements for her husband's band.

She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, active in XLJ Club, and was a member of the Hospital Auxiliary. She had earned 1,448 hours of volunteer work at Gainesville Memorial Hospital and received the gold pin and eight service bars from the auxiliary. She also sponsored the Candy Stripers organization for one year.

Survivors are one sister, Miss Ruth Carter of Gainesville, two brothers, Claude Carter of Kankakee, Ill. and Herbert W. Carter of Dallas. [Gainesville, Texas, Daily Register, Saturday January 9, 1971, p. 12]
