CHARLOTTE, NC — Harold Wright Uzzell, 85, of Charlotte, passed away on Friday September 4, 2009, at the Greensboro home of his daughter and son-in-law.

A service of celebration of Harold's life was held at Saint Giles Presbyterian Church in Charlotte, on Friday September 11, at 4 pm following a private family burial.

The eighth of thirteen children, Hal was born in LaGrange, North Carolina to the late Robert and Jewel Uzzell, on November 22, 1923.

Hal served in the US Navy during World War II, on the USS LST 609 in the Pacific Theatre, and participated in the longest Naval battle in history, the Battle of Leyte Gulf, in 1944.

Hal graduated from the Wharton School of Finance at the University of Pennsylvania, and began his career in consumer finance with Redisco, later working with Chrysler Credit Corporation, and finally with Barclays American.

He married Virginia "Ginny" Bassett on September 29, 1951 and had a son, Wright, and daughter, Lisa.

Harold's career took him and his family to Richmond, Virginia; Atlanta, Georgia; Detroit, Michigan; and finally to Charlotte, where he has lived for the past 39 years.

Hal was a member of Saint Giles Presbyterian Church, where he served as a teacher, on the board of elders, on mission trips and on the presbytery of the Evangelical Presbyterian Church.

Hal was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Leslie, Roger, Robert, Dan, Bobby and Byron Uzzell, and his sisters Alice Mewborn, Josephine Harper, Ava Lucas and Esther Brown.

He is survived by his wife Ginny; son, Wright Uzzell (Sylvia); daughter, Lisa Lewis (Buster); grandchildren Aaron Uzzell, Chelsea Lewis, Audrey Lewis and Lauren Black; sister Mary Frances Griffin; brother Gerald Uzzell; and many nieces and nephews.
