ROBERT ACUNA Age 88, was called home to Heaven on June 13, 2009. He was born in 1920 to the late Honorina and Joseph Acuna in Pacoima, California. He was proud of being a native Californian whose family roots predated statehood. He found the love of his life in 1951 and married his beloved Jenny in 1952, and had 54 wonderful years together until her death in 2006.

During his younger years there were major issues that influenced his life. The Depression developed his sense of self. He learned how to survive hunger and illness, it helped him develop a fierce work ethic, perseverance and most important how to survive. Somehow out of all this came an amazing sense of humor that carried him through life.

Dad was an Army veteran of WWII, landing on Normandy Beach three days after D-day. He served 21 days in combat as a machine gunner when the average life span was 3 days. He was wounded on July 4th outside of St. Lo France and spent three years in Army hospitals recuperating from his injuries, flat on his back, in traction for 6 months and then relearning how to walk. He was awarded the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star.

Seeing combat action in Europe wasn't enough for him so after coming home, finding and marrying the love of his life, had three children.

Dad was a master mechanic and tool maker who always found a way to make his work faster and easier by building tools as needed. He was employed by Lockheed and built planes from the F-104 to SR-71 Blackbird and the L1011.
He was a member of the American Association of Machinists, a life member of The American Legion and the Disabled American Veterans.

Dad was an artist and craftsman who loved to work with his hands and could fix anything. He was also a cartoonist, he enjoyed toys, the sillier the better, both making and playing with them, he loved to read and taught himself to play the piano, guitar and harmonica. The love of working with his hands extended to his fruit trees and we were blessed with fresh fruit from his lemon, orange, grapefruit, avocado, plum, persimmon, apricot and peach trees.

Dad also loved to travel and driving vacations were the norm, traveling from hidden beaches in Baja California to national parks and trips to Oregon, Washington, Canada and the interior of Mexico. In his later years he and our mom would get in the car and just go, spending many wonderful days just exploring, where ever their van took them.

Robert is survived by daughter, Annabelle Acuna-Austin; his sons, Richard Dale and Robert Paul Acuna; grandchildren, Christopher, Noel, Jonathon, Matthew and William Acuna; and great grandson, Anthony.

Viewing and Visitation on Friday, June 19, 2009, 9:00 a.m., with Funeral Mass immediately following at 11:00 a.m., at Mission Hills Catholic Mortuary in Mission Hills.
