F.F., his wife E. Evelyn Ainsworth, and their four children moved from rural Trinity County in 1942 to Sweeny, TX. He accepted a better, higher paying teaching job in this small but growing community. F.F. taught Shop/Wood working classes and eventually became principal of Sweeny High School. He retired from Sweeny ISD in 1960 and in the following year ran for the elective office of Sweeny City Secretary. F.F. held this position from 1961 to 1982 when he did not seek re-election.
He was an active member of the First Baptist Church in Sweeny and helped build the current church sanctuary. F.F. was also a member of the Mason's Men Club. His other interests were vegetable gardening, reading, and traveling throughout the USA.
F.F. Smith was a gentle, loving man who cared greatly for his family and friends. He died suddenly of a heart attack at the Sweeny Community Hospital in June 1983. He is buried at the Sweeny Cemetery.
