Nazi Leader. First Reich Leader of the SS. Schreck was one of the earliest members of the Nazi party and a member of Adolf Hitler's inner circle. He had served in World War I, and was one of the founders of the Sturmabteilung (SA - Storm Troopers). In 1925 he became one of the first members of Hitler's personal bodyguard of the Schutzstaffel (SS), and was its commander until his resignation the following year. (Heinrich Himmler would assume this post in 1929). Schreck then served as Hitler's favorite driver from 1926 to 1934, rising to the rank of SS-Oberführer, a rank between colonel and general. He contracted meningitis and was given a Nazi state funeral, attended by Hitler and most of the senior party leadership. In common with many Nazi graves, after World War II Schreck's grave marker was removed, and there is now a memorial to war victims on the spot where he was buried.
