Dr. Harold James Keener, 60, Rt. 4 New Leicester Highway, an Asheville dentist for many years died Tuesday afternoon at his home.
A lifelong resident of Buncombe County, Keener was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, where he was a former Sunday school teacher and deacon and had been active in the Training Union program. A retired Army major, he had served in the U.S. Army Dental Corps during World War II. He was a 1940 graduate of Lee H. Edwards High School and attended Asheville-Biltmore and Mars Hill colleges. He graduated from the Emory University School of Dentistry in Atlanta. He had practiced dentistry in West Asheville for the past 35 years.
He was a member of the National Rifle Association and of the Buncombe County, North Carolina and national dental society.
He was a son of the late Luther Clarence and Bertha Mae Atkins Keener and was the husband of the late Frances Esther Whitaker Keener who died in 1983.
Surviving are a daughter, Jennifer of the home, son, Jeffrey David Keener of Asheville, a brother, L C Keener Jr Asheville; and two grandchildren.
Services will be at 11:00 A.M. Friday in the chapel of Anders-Rice Funeral Home. Dr. Steven C. Carreker and the Rev. John H. Knight will officiate. Burial will be in Green Hills Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7-9 P.M. Thursday at the funeral home.
