Harold, age 87, passed away on Tuesday at HospiceCare Inc. He was born the son of George & Susan (Hanson) Manthe. Harold graduated from DeForest High School in 1940. He was a lifetime member of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, serving on the church council as financial secretary and evangelism chairman. Harold was also the Sunday school superintendent and taught eighth grade Sunday school. He served his country for three years in World War II, serving in the Army Air Force with the rank of staff sergeant in headquarters supply. Twenty-one months of that was in Iceland with the 959th Air Base Security Battalion. He returned home for R and R in October 1944 at which time he married his sweetheart, Lucille "Luci" Wolf on Oct. 20, 1944. He returned to active duty and was later honorably discharged. Harold and "Luci" started their life together and built their own home which they are still living in. Harold worked at Marling Lumber Co. of Madison for 38 years as an estimator and salesman. He was a "Mr. Fix-it" and enjoyed helping others and making friends. Harold was a member of the DeForest American Legion Post 348. He leaves to mourn his dear wife, Lucille "Luci" Manthe; a son, John (Suzanne) Manthe; three daughters, Mary (Chuck) Schwartz, Linda ( Rev. Richard) Kugler and Julie (Dave) Hildebrandt; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; eight step-great-grandchildren; a brother, David (Ann) Manthe; and many other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Jerome, Ross, Glen and Willard; and a sister, Clara Wendt. Funeral services were held at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in the town of Leeds, with the Rev. Harold W. Sturm officiating. Interment with military rites was held. "We all look forward to reuniting in Heaven on that great Judgement Day or sooner."
