F. M. Avans was born in Monroe County, Tennessee. He married first, UNKNOWN and had two children, Martha Lucinda and Thomas Jefferson Avans. He later married Elizabeth "Betsy" Boyd on 22 Jul 1858 in Monroe County, and was the father of 5 more children: John H. Avans, Sarah Elizabeth Avans BREEDLOVE, Francis M. Theodosia "Dosie" Avans STEWART, James Willis Avans, and Mary J. "Mollie" Avans BULLARD.
He married Mrs. Amanda Buffington on 13 Dec 1891 in Dade County, Georgia.
He was a Civil War Veteran. He enlisted as First Sergeant in Company K of the 62nd Tennessee Mounted Infantry. He was captured at Vicksburg, Mississippi, and parolled out after signing an Oath of Allegance.
After the war, he relocated his family to Dade County, Georgia, and became a Minister of the Gospel. He performed the marriage rites for many of the young couples in Dade County, Georgia, and surrounding areas.
His date of birth is based on census and military records. His date of death is estimated to have occurred before Feb 1904 based on the list of CSA Pension Roll removals for DeKalb County, AL. He is listed as F. M. Avans "Dead".
