William M. Russell was the son of Andrew and Mary Stewart Russell, and, based upon census records, was probably born in 1832. He married Mary E. Wilson 10 December 1857 in Perry County. His Confederate service record does not give a date or place of death, but the last entry is a "Clothing Receipt Roll" dated May 31, 1864. Family researchers generally agree he likely died that year while in service. This seems to be confirmed by the 1866 Alabama Census for Perry County. There is a category "Soldiers Killed, Died of Sickness, or Disabled." To this his widow, Mary E. Wilson Russell, answered that "one soldier died of sickness." Mary Wilson Russell married Laurence Jones 8 November 1866 in Perry County, and later moved to Milam County, Texas with her sons George L. Russell and John T. Russell and daughter Annie Jones.
