RALEIGH -- William Benjamin Aycock, (Major, U.S.A. Ret.) of Raleigh died Friday, April 11, 2003.

Born July 1, 1920, he was the son of William Benjamin Aycock and Lucille Best Aycock of Raleigh and grandson of North Carolina Governor Charles Brantley Aycock.

He attended Murphy School and Hugh Morson High School in Raleigh and graduated from Oak Ridge Military Academy and North Carolina State University. He served in World War II and saw combat in North Africa, Italy, Southern France and Germany. He also saw combat in Korea. Among his decorations are the Silver Star, Soldiers Metal, Bronze Star with V and 2 clusters and Purple Heart 2 clusters. After retiring from the Army, he returned to Raleigh and taught in the N.C. Public School System, retiring in 1987. He was a life-long Presbyterian and a member of White Memorial Presbyterian Church.

Surviving are his wife, Jane Beaman Aycock; daughters, Jane Aycock Murphy and husband, Sam Walker Murphy of Jasper, Alabama, Beth Aycock Holden and husband, J. Michael Holden, of Wake Forest; five grandchildren, Elizabeth Woodfin Murphy, Sam Aycock Murphy, William Aycock Holden, Stuart Rawlinson Holden and Scott Courtney Holden; his sister, Mrs. James McKee; and sister-in-law, Mrs. Charles B. Aycock, both of Raleigh; nieces, Marguerite McKee Moss and Lucille McKee Clarkson.

The graveside service will be held on Monday, April 14, 2003 at 3 p.m. in Oakwood Cemetery. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to White Memorial Presbyterian Church, 1704 Oberlin Road Raleigh, N.C. 27608 or The Parkinson's Center of Raleigh, 3622 Hayworth Drive, Raleigh, N.C. 27609.
