Attained the rank of Chief Yeoman in the US Navy during service in WWII

July 23, 2001: A memorial service was conducted by Bill Byers at Grace Community Church in Fruita, Colorado. His remains were cremated and buried at Orchard Mesa Cemetary in Grand Junction, Colorado next to his parents.

Vern Barnes, 79, of Pearce, Sunsites, AZ died July 11, 2001 in Willcox, AZ. He was born in Boulder, CO to William Henry and Katherine (Calkins) Barnes and was raised in the Montrose and Grand Junction, CO areas. Vern was the retired Postmaster in Thoreau, NM and moved to Sunsites in 1981 from Thoreau. He was a graduate of Nucla, CO high school and proudly served in the US Navy during WW 11 in the South Pacific, was a charter member of the VFW Post in Thoreau and was instrumental in the organizing of the Thoreau Fire Dept and even served as Fire Chief, he was also responsible for the Senior Center in Thoreau. Vern worked for the Atomic Energy Commission on the Navajo Reservation and lived and worked on or near the Navajo Indian Reservation for over 32 years. On June 25, 1950 in Nucla, Colorado he married Ida M. Burbridge. Survivors include his wife Ida of Sunsites, sons Norvell (Terri) Barnes of Silver City, NM and Gene (Tina) Bames of Santa Fe, NM. Also surviving are his sisters Maxine Kolby of Grants Pass, OR, Eloise Clark of Fruita, CO and Rose Marie Kreis of Fort Scott, KS along with his grandchildren Bryce, Amanda, Chris and Tonita and 3 great grandchildren and very special friends Ray & Linda Hodges. Preceding him in death was his parents. Private cremation was conducted at Westlawn Crematorium with a Memorial Service on Monday, July 23, 2001 at 10:00 am at Grace Community Church, 1173 17 1/2 Rd, Fruita, CO with graveside at 11:30 am at Orchard Mesa Cemetery in Grand Junction, CO. Contributions may be made to the Sunsites Senior Center, P.O. Box 701, Pearce, AZ 85625 or Elsie Ganfield, American Cancer Society, Sunsites Unit, 1107 Irene, Pearce, AZ 85625. Arrangements under the direction of Westlawn Chapel & Mortuary in Willcox, AZ."
