An LDS family group record asserts that Peter was the son of Daniel (1741-1827) & Rebecca (Merlitt 1743-1832) Dilts of Morris County, NJ. According to the "History of Marion County, Ohio" written in 1883, Peter Dilts was married in New Jersey on August 15, 1791, to "Elizabeth" (surname uncertain -- possibly YAWGER). In about 1812, Peter & Elizabeth moved to Muskingum County, OH, and eventually settled in Newton Township near the present village of White Cottage. The couple reportedly parented eight children: Henry Dilts, John Dilts, Sarah Dilts, Peter Dilts Jr., Daniel Dilts, Elisabeth (a.k.a. "Elizabeth") Dilts, Katharine Dilts, & Rebecca Dilts. Peter Dilts & family can be found on the 1820, 1830, & 1840 federal censuses living in Newton Township, Muskingum County, OH. In 1829, Peter & Elizabeth reportedly sold a parcel of land to the directors of the Tenth School District of Newton Township for one dollar. The original Dilts School was built there. Dilts School later burned & was then rebuilt on nearby property. The school continued to operate until 1940 & was then later used as a church until 1965. According to the "History of Marion County, Ohio," Peter's wife Elizabeth died December 24, 1835. Peter drafted a will in 1847 (still on file at the Muskingum County Probate Court) in which it is implied that he was twice married after Elizabeth's death -once to an unknown person and once to an "Arletta" (surname unknown -- who is also buried at Bagley Cemetery (a.k.a. "Covenanter Church Cemetery"). Peter's will also implies that he fathered two more children with his second wife: George Washington Dilts & Rachel Dilts.Age: 79y
