Jim was born in Buffalo, New York in 1935, the oldest of four brothers. He attended the University of Steubenville in Ohio, where he received his bachelor's degree in English, History and Secondary Education. He met Angela Maria Furnari of Buffalo, New York, through mutual friends and the two were soon married. They had three children: Deobrah, Lisa and Steven.
Jim taught for several years and then returned to State University New York at Geneseo to receive his Master of Science Degree in Library Science and Education. Jim loved to study and learn, and received certificates from several other institutions of higher education: Case Western Reserve (Certificate in Archives & Records Management): Dominican University (Certificate in Paper Preservation); Chromatic Club of Buffalo (Performer's Certificate); Dom Kultury, Kielce, Poland (Certificate in Ethnic Studies); and Jagiellonian University in Poland (Certificate in Ethnography.) He was also ordained as a Deacon and served most recently at St. Matthew's Catholic Church.
Jim had a long and illustrious library career, which began in 1969 when he took the position of Head Librarian for Alliance College in Cambridge Springs, Pennsylvania. In 1977 he moved to the public library world when he took the position of Coordinator, Technical and Computer Services, for Erie County (PA) Library System. In 1990 he moved to Oak Park (IL) Public Library, where he served subsequently as Head of Technical Services, Head of Information Services, and Manager of the Maze Branch Library. In 2001 his former boss Carol Brey-Casiano encouraged him to apply for the position of Main Library Administrator (later upgraded to Deputy Director of Library Services) at the El Paso Public Library, a position he held until his death in 2009.
Jim belonged to numerous professional organizations, and held many offices within those organizations. He was a member of the American Library Association and served on Carol Brey-Casiano's Presidential Advisory Committee from 2003-2005. He served as Chair and Archivist for the Border Regional Library Association; Chair of the Border Regional Archives Group; various Committees of the Library Leadership and Management Association (LLAMA); Chair, Northwest Interlibrary Cooperative of Pennsylvania; Member, OCLC Cataloging Advisory Committee; Trustee, PRLC/PALINET, and Chair, Northwest Chapter of the Pennsylvania Library Association. He was also an active member of REFORMA, the Texas Library Association, and the Illinois Library Association.
Jim lived life to the fullest, continuing to pursue his interests in reading, music, and travel. His beautiful singing voice could be heard at every staff birthday and special occasion, as well as in numerous chorales such as the El Paso Chorale and the El Paso Gilbert & Sullivan Troupe.
