Stephen was the son of Hugh Gilmore and Elizabeth Gulley of Cumberland Co., NC. He was the grandson of Stephen Gilmore and Amy Matthews, Jesse Gulley and Sarah Slocumb.

Stephen Gilmore was Killed in Action near Richmond, VA at the Battle of Drewry’s Bluff.
